USB PD Adapters
Fast charger protocols such as USB PD are dramatically reducing the charging time for a cellphone from an overnight charge to less than 30 minutes. This makes charging more convenient for the user allowing almost continual access to mobile devices.
USB PD is set to become the new standard for charging mobile devices. The USB PD power capability of up to 100 W will make it possible for the user to employ a single charger for cell-phone, tablet and laptop computer.
PowiGaN is Power Integrations’ internally developed gallium nitride (GaN) technology. PowiGaN switches replace the traditional silicon transistors on the primary side, reducing switching losses and enabling power supplies that are more efficient, smaller and lighter than silicon alternatives. PowiGaN-based ICs achieve up to 95% efficiency across the full load range and up to 100 W in enclosed adapter implementations without requiring a heatsink.
Notebook Adapters
Power Integrations offerings include integrated, high-voltage ICs for off-line power conversion in Notebook Adapter power supply applications. Notebook Adapter applications utilize several different families of PI's higher power devices, all of which enable highly efficient and compact laptop power supplies to be in a sealed enclosure, to withstand high ambient temperatures (e.g., 40 °C), and provide no-load performance <90 mW at 230 VAC.
TOPSwitch-JX is also available in a ultra-low-profile package (eDIP Package), that enables remarkably slim, compact, and lightweight power supplies from 20 to 100 watts.
Each IC includes a high-voltage switch with a feature-rich PWM controller in one device. Features include current limiting and thermal shutdown with automatic fault recovery capability to improve reliability, frequency jittering to reduce EMI and EcoSmart technology to dramatically reduce standby energy waste.
